Jan Kiemeneij

°1889 1981
In 1921 Jan Kiemeneij becomes member of the Moderne Kunst circle led by Jozef Peeters. Aside from his constructivist work with strong simplification of forms and bright colors, he also makes stage designs that are allied to art nouveau. In 1926 he provokes a scandal by decorating the façade of a shoe store with a dynamic composition of bright color expanses which, for that matter, was the sole intervention upon Antwerp’s urban decor by an abstract painter. Shortly thereafter, he joins a group of traditional artists, moves to the hamlet of Kalmthout in 1935, his paintings then becoming devoted to heather-landscapes.
