The silkscreen print Semite is the first from an edition of 10 prints that Marlene Dumas made in 2004. Dumas takes the human figure as her starting point to develop a visual critique of contemporary racial, sexual and social identities. Semite is a portrait of a man who, judging by the title, hails from the Middle East. In her portraits, Dumas focuses on the individual rather than the general; she does not turn her figures into symbols of broader issues.
