Thomas Ruff’s portraits are critical imitations of conventional portrait photography. The large format of Porträt (F. Müller) makes imperfections particularly visible. Although Ruff photographs with the utmost precision, the subject remains anonymous and alien. The photograph reveals only a superficial layer. According to Ruff, the ambition of portrait photography to capture the complexity and psychology of an individual can never be realised.
