In 2006, four Brussels-based artists, active primarily in the expanded fields of film and video, decided to join forces to found the AUGUSTE ORTS production platform, named after the obscure historical figure whose memory lives on in the street which houses the foursome's headquarters until this day.
Initially intended to address shared questions concerning production and distribution, the ambitions of Auguste Orts quickly transcended merely practical considerations ; there were deeper reasons, after all, why these particular artists chose to exhange experiences and ideas, and these deeper reasons clearly relate to shared intuitions, sensibilities, and sensitivities vis-à-vis the film medium and the broader context of audiovisual production. In this publication, founding members Herman Asselberghs, Sven Augustijnen, Manon de Boer and Anouk De Clercq are invited, for the first time, to articulate these intuitions and sensibilities as a program of sorts : A healthy distrust of language, along with a critical attitude towards dominant modes of image production, figure prominently among its major points.
Published on the occasion of 'Auguste Orts : Correspondence', organized at the Antwerp museum of contemporary art M HKA, this volume features a lengthy round table discussion moderated by the exhibition curator Dieter Roelstraete, an essay by TJ Demos, and a selection of five letters written by the artists and the curator in which many of the aforementioned common concerns are touched upon.
