Brotherhoods, or confraternities, are characterized by their tradition, devotion and hierarchical structure. By completely covering their faces and bodies, these penitents lose their individuality, as they come out as a community. Because the robes strongly bring to mind the cloaks worn by members of the Ku Klux Klan, this image can evoke a feeling of disgust and revulsion in the viewer.
