The photograph entitled The Arciconfraternity of Santa Monica, Chiesa SS. Annunziata. Sorrento, April 2010, shows members of a Catholic brotherhood preparing for the annual Easter Procession of penitents in the Italian city of Sorrento. Brotherhoods, or confraternities, are characterized by their tradition, devotion and hierarchical structure. By completely covering their faces and bodies, these penitents lose their individuality, as they come out as a community. Because the robes strongly bring to mind the cloaks worn by members of the Ku Klux Klan, this image can evoke a feeling of disgust and revulsion in the viewer. He looks at a hidden, closed world where he has no access to.
