This painting is immediately recognizable as 'a landscape', with motifs (the tree, the road, the horizon) that typify the landscapes of Robert Zandvliet. Despite the clearly figurative element, the piece also has traits of abstract art. Under Zandvliet's brush, the landscape transforms into a genre that holds the middle ground between figuration and abstraction.
As in his earlier work, it is never about a particular object or a specific place; here, too, the matter at hand is no distinct spot or view. The artist searches for specific painterly solutions for the rendering of an archetype of a 'general landscape'. Each of Robert Zandvliet's landscapes is an investigation into what a contemporary landscape painting might be.
