De Collectie I – A Selection

31 August - 10 November 2002
MuHKA, Antwerpen

In the past few years, little was done with the M HKA collection, which after fifteen years of collecting already comprises around seven hundred works of art. This will change from now on. The higher floors will be reserved for changing collection presentations: a place where the works of art will be exhibited and where they enter into unexpected mutual relationships, where the various stories, lines and focal points in the collection become obvious and where discoveries will be made.

In order to encourage contact with the collection, room will also be made for artists to start working within the context of the collection presentation.
The first artist who is being linked with the collection in this way is Guy Mees. He was asked to incorporate an exhibition of his own work into a presentation of the collection. The museum therefore selected the exhibits in question in consultation with him.
The M HKA manages collections of various origins: the Gordon Matta-Clark collection which at the time was the basis for the collection, the museum's own acquisitions, part of the collection acquired by the Flemish Community and the I.C.C. patrimony, including an important video archive. A distinctly international selection was made from this collection for the first new-style collection presentation. Works by Vito Acconci, Dennis Adams, Daniel Buren, Marlene Dumas, Jimmie Durham, Dan Graham, Craigie Horsfield, Donald Judd, Alan McCollum, Rodney Graham, Juan Muñoz, Bruce Nauman, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Thomas Ruff, Cindy Sherman, Minette Vari, Lawrence Weiner and others are presented. A selection which lends historical depth to the present, including photographs, installations, objects, sculptures, drawings, paintings and video work.
