Grüner Baum, 1986
Painting , 250 x 301 x 4.5 cm
oil, canvas

Grüner Baum was painted upside-down, like many of Georg Baselitz’s work. Baselitz first employed this method in 1967, it allows him to remain distant from what he is painting and instead focus on how he is painting.

By reconnecting with Expressionism, an art style that pre-dates World War II, Baselitz and other artists try to overcome the legacy of the Nazis.
