LATT: Dialogue #1 Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven & Andrea Pichl
Zwischen, 2012
The title of the group of sculptures, Zwischen („between“), refers to a void, an unforeseen and unwanted in between space that comes into being when a right-angled prefab slab building is erected next to a prewar apartment house. This spatial phenomenon on in urban housing, reveals the confluence of the standardized and the heterogeneous. With affixed wooden panels. Pichl reconstructs these gaps at a ratio of 1:10, describing the small spaces between the angular, older buildings and the squared Plattenbaus. The work was inspired by an essay in the architecture magazine Arch+ as part of an issue dedicated to urban development in Berlin. The author gave an account of these empty lots and their measurements, and drew a connection to artist Gordon Matta-Clark’s Fake Estates.
