Burl wood, tempera on the wall

The new sculpture Rainbow Circle III presented in the middle of the wall incorporates a vagina sculpted in Burlwood – wood that grows after a tree is damaged and which can consist of shades resembling a variety of skin tones. Acting as a counterbalance to the tendency since classical Greek tradition to hide female genitalia in sculptures and images, this contemporary fertility sculpture seeks to foreground the vagina as an organ of shared female experience through history. Hair and branches are painted around this wooden sculpture, again evoking the body and the symbolism of trees. For Otten, placing sexuality, gender, womanhood and intimacy centrally in her practice acts as kind of visual activism, that adresses taboos and replaces the male gaze with a female perspective.
