Magical staff
This magical staff ‘Tunggal panaluan’ has great significance within the Batak world of gods and spirits. The ‘DATU’ shaman-priest made the staff himself, but more significantly, he activated its magical properties. This was done by putting a small bag on top with ‘pupuk’ a sort of ointment made from the charred remains of the organs of a child that had been sacrificed. It would protect the clan in future. The staff was a multifunctional instrument. A complex ritual dance was performed holding the staff until a state of trance was reached. All types of magic were executed with the staff, which helped in matters of political affairs, and was able to find thieves or control the weather. According to myth, Si Singamangaraja XII had great talent conjuring up rain with it. The iconography on the staff relates to the myth of an incestuous couple. On top we find brother and sister, who turn into wood together with many people and animals climbing after them.
