INBOX: Frank JMA Castelyns – ARTICULATION

The M HKA reserves its fifth floor for surprise events and intimate pop-up presentations. INBOX is a place that both inspires and surprises, and grants us a glimpse into the universe of passionate thinkers and doers. With INBOX, M HKA creates a physical space in which the museum addresses often-reccuring questions. In between the various events, we show a selection of our collection work, paying particular attention to video art.
"As an artist, Frank JMA Castelyns explores the planet, seeking world views. Striking events and symbols fire up his senses and empathy, resulting in images with stirring qualities, but also with beautiful simplicity. The aesthetic layer always comes first, followed by the deeper layer of meaning, supported by the 'memory functions' of artistic images. Memories tend to recede gently into the background only to be triggered by a word, image or association. The images of Castelyns are perhaps best captured as aide memoires, symbolic signs that are emotionally charged, spring from the sensitive intellect and makes sense on a cerebral level. After all, each image unfolds a mental plan, charged with rich artistic and historical accounts, traditions, images or characters. It is the inherent landmarks that rouse the viewer to enter into memory mode and discover stories, messages or meanings. Sometimes, meaning is exciting, shocking or open, but always sensitive. The art of Castelyns moves between different worlds, calibrating overlaps."
