INBOX: LINES

28 August - 04 September 2014
M HKA, Antwerp

In 2014, the M HKA sets aside the fifth floor of the museum for surprise events and intimate pop-up presentations. INBOX is a place that both inspires and surprises, and grants us a glimpse into the universe of passionate thinkers and doers.

Kunstbende, the competition for artistic talent aged 13 to 19 years, celebrated its 15th anniversary. For this festive edition, cultural centre De Warande in Turnhout was taken over by fledgling talent from all over the country. The best were assessed in different categories. LINES, better known as Linus Bonduelle (born in 1996), clinched the top prize in the category Visual National: exhibition space at INBOX for one week.

LINES' fresh and diverse oeuvre consists of graphic experiments with photographs, various illustrative observations - whether written down in a notebook or not. The artwork that won him Kunstbende, What I See When I Close My Eyes, came about after some experiments with a pen and carrier. Eventually, Linus Bonduelle chose to use a white MDF board as medium. With black marker and a steady hand, he began to draw, starting in the top left-hand corner. Slowly, the board filled up with images that emerged spontaneously, often inspired by friends and everyday life. All kinds of shapes and objects swarm around in a cartoonish style, but through the use of a single colour and medium, the result is somewhat muted. Yet, Bonduelle does not want this one work to define him; he masters several styles and wants to continue to experiment.
