INBOX: Margriet Luyten – LEVENSWERK II – The Art Mediators

(c) Margriet Luyten
15 December - 07 January 2018
M HKA, Antwerp

M HKA reserves its fifth floor for surprising interventions and intimate pop-up presentations. INBOX is a place that inspires and surprises, one that offers us a glimpse into the world of passionate thinkers and doers. With INBOX, M HKA creates a physical space in which the museum addresses often-recurring questions.

In the periods between the various events, we present a selection of our collection works, with particular attention to video art.

INBOX can be visited for free.

In her work, Margriet Luyten occupies herself intensively with time. What is time with regard to man and his (mortal) body? She has portrayed centenarians, given a new appearance to existing death portraits of children and followed her own mother's deathbed. In 2013, she realised the film Levenswerk I – De Kunstenaars [Life Work I - The Artists].

'Levenswerk II - The Art Mediators'

After Levenswerk I, tranquil video portraits of nine artists in the final phase of their working life, Luyten now meets eight so-called art mediators, such as museum directors, art historians, gallery owners – and one art advisor. How do these intermediaries between the artwork and the public deal with the passage of time in their field? How do they think about their (altered or unaltered) position? In contrast to artists, who have their studio, mediators are dependent on institutions and on their own platforms. Words are very important, more so than is the case with artists. Meet Liesbeth Brandt Corstius, Rudi Fuchs, Lily van Ginneken, Wim van Krimpen, Henk van Os, Deborah Campert-Wolf and Flemish mediators Anny De Decker and Flor Bex.

'Levenswerk I - The Artists'

In 2013, Margriet Luyten showed Levenswerk I at Museum De Pont in Tilburg. Five artists included in the work – Roger Raveel, Loes van der Horst, Ger Lataster, JCJ Vanderheyden and Henk Peeters – died shortly after completion of the project. Ata Kandó died recently. The other artists in this video portrait are Armando, Nono Reinhold and Co Westerik.

The work can be seen on a flat screen just outside the INBOX space, near the stairs to M HKAFE.

The opening speech during the preview on 14.12.2017 at 19:00 will be given by Phillip van den Bossche, director of Mu.ZEE in Ostend.

Alongside Levenswerk I and II, some books with video stills, observations and memories and specially written essays were published. Both Mariëtte Haveman and Lynne van Rhijn wrote an essay for Levenswerk II - de kunstbemiddelaars.

Both books are for sale in the shop for € 29.50.
