The three rocks presented here side-by-side on a shelf are like many others of Jimmie Durham’s stones: pretentious. A small gesture made by the artist transforms them into something else. Here, instead of painting them in a pretty colour or giving them human features like eyes or limbs, the artist placed three name plates underneath each one, labeling them as “doctor”, “lawyer” and “indian chief”.
