LODGERS #15 Baumusik

The LODGERS programme is a collaboration between AIR Antwerpen and M HKA. We welcome imaginative artistic initiatives to come and occupy the 6th floor at M HKA. The programme offers a unique opportunity for public interface, to organisations and initiatives who focus specifically on producing and commissioning, and who do not have their own public space. These LODGERS might be publishers, commissioning agencies, research initiatives, labels, collectives, discussion platforms or other initiatives experimenting with artistic practice who would be interested to live, work and experiment in Antwerp.
LODGERS are welcomed from "Eurocore" – the combined region of Benelux and the Rheinland. Free entrance to visit our LODGERS. Come and say hello!
The LODGERS programme is co-curated by Nav Haq, Senior Curator at M HKA, and Alan Quireyns, Artistic Director at AIR Antwerpen.
baumusik is happy to announce [BAU034], its second experimental group exhibition as guests of the LODGERS programme. The artist collective and music label from Cologne is a restless mixture of visual artists, writers, filmmakers, art students, musicians, cultural activists, DJs and others. It was founded in 2016 by friends, guests and collaborators of the beloved DIY venue Baustelle Kalk, a location which used to be a shelter for artistic and musical experiments that couldn't find a niche within the conventional cultural context of the city. Founded in 2012 by Meryem Erkus, her sister Fatma Erkus and filmmaker Nicole Wegner, Baustelle Kalk quickly became a central meeting place and playground for all kinds of artistic minds. Running for five years, the space was an equally rough yet inspiring safe haven, and never lacked energy nor the selfless support for artists. Out of this little bubble a handful artists founded the label collective baumusik.
baumusik's mission is to think beyond genres and disciplines and aims to develop the most confusing catalogue of Cologne. Whether it is an exhibition or a record, a poster series or a special event, it will also be given a catalogue number. Amongst these, you find [BAU420] “420 – Love Letters to Rihanna” a group exhibition and performance night in tribute Rihanna, [BAU025] a two week tour through China feat. six baumusik acts, or [BAU020] the triple CD super limited edition CÖLLN by infamous art and neo pop group HALL&RAUCH.
Meryem Erkus, co-founder of baumusik and our current LODGER has invited two central artists of baumusik – Timothy Shearer and Janina Warnk – to create new installations in the LODGERS space. With contrasting methods and aesthetics, they will build complex installations reflecting on public and private space, where brutal architecture meets a sanctuary of softness and fernweh. This combination composes an all-pervasive installation that will serve as performance stages for live shows and many other artworks by baumusik artists.
The exhibition will be developed throughout July and will be fully realised on Thursday 2nd of August with special performances on Saturday 4th of August. Within the exhibition, baumusik will release several new works such as a fashion edition, music releases, novels and videos.
Their 2nd anniversary will be celebrated in the garden of AIR Antwerpen on Friday 17th of August.

zo-on slows (aka. Echo Ho) is a Beijing-born, Cologne-based artist, producer, composer and audio-visual performer. Prior to revealing herself as an ‘adventurous musician’, she re-invented the traditional Chinese string instrument Gu Qin into a Slow Qin by extending its function to become a wireless interface, enabling real-time improvisation using customised music software on the laptop. Ho spent years experimenting and exploring in the field of electronic improvisation and live composition, Inspired by both historically informed performance and nightly club sounds, With her new solo project zo-on slows, she began producing textured and emotional border crossing music and start to release in 2017 on baumusik.
LIBERTY SNAKE aka Marie-Claire Delarber, formally known as one half of the performance-duo Söhnlein Brilliant and as a part of the baumusik-formation Qui Basat, just released her first solo album prématuré. Her music deals with perfection, anxiety, sociopathy and love for rough electronic music. Her performances are strong statements for modern feminism and rethinking aesthetics.
UMMN is a Cologne based project with members formerly known as Opan, Mia Nc (Han Brock) and Qui Basat. In reconstructing old sound patterns, they seek to create unity with antagonistic contrasts in performance and sound.
Hall & Rauch is a music and art project founded 2011 in Cologne. Working on the edges of pop with a strong awareness of its history, their music works like a counterpart to the so-called ‘Teflonyouth’. It is about collaboration, secret knowledge and confidence in the continuity of good ideas.
CAMP INC are Cologne based Roland Kaiser Wilhelm and Sebastian Ingenhoff. Teaming up as a techno duo, they play energetic and raw club live-sets. That means wild acid basslines, spacy synths and dirty kickdrums, bringing love, sweat and madness. After having released several EPs and Mixtapes on different labels their debut album Perché La Notte was released in October 2016 on Baumusik.
Who is Jeandado?
He appears, swiftly, silently, like a cloud or a horse. He is, of course, a musician. Unlike most musicians, most of his art is made via his eyes and arms. He watches you and floats his arms like antennae. And then a beat sets in and a sound a bass, and then Jeandado begins to sing or rather, not sing. With Im Rüssel (In the trunk) he once again comes forth as one of the foremost interpreters of the music of Jeandado. To call Im Rüssel techno would be like calling sweet birdsong “chirping“. Jeandado never chirps. He is, wholly and truly, a trunk man, a nozzle man, a probocis and beak man, a man to unite and transcend all of the sounds of the animal kingdom and all the sounds of man. Most of all, he sounds like Jeandado, a suprising feat and stunt most daring. Who else in this time and place would dare to be a Jean, a Dado or even … no one.
Koxette is the new alias of the electronic duo Caroline Kox and Antonio de Luca, who are also known as COLORIST for combining 'New music' and electronic dance music. Koxette was created as a dystopian action figure to fight with every beat against the loss of the future. A pop design against pop. The album 21st Century Migraine appears at the end of the year on baumusik.
