LATT: Sound effects #5 Juan Pèrez Agirregoikoa

19 December - 29 March 2009
MuHKA, Antwerpen

This edition of LONELY AT THE TOP comprises work by the Basque artist Juan Pérez Agirregoikoa [°1963], who lives and works in Paris. His work reflects a realistic, very modern and bitingly sarcastic humour that we find in the shape of watercolours on large flags and banners. As he himself says, him Juan Pérez Agirregoikoa discovered this medium at the moment when he as an artist could not find a place to exhibit. It seemed to him that demonstrations at regular times were the best way to express himself; simply going out into the street with a canvas and saying what you have to say.

Juan Pérez Agirregoikoa’s work is layered, so that the viewer has to look at it again and again if he wants to find the link between the mixture of traditional techniques and the hyper-topical content. Agirregoikoa may be considered as a kind of jester who challenges the viewer to continuously question himself and the world around him.

For his new exhibition in the M HKA, Juan Perez Agirregoikoa projects short films, which he produced in cooperation with a Basque choir. At Juan Pérez Agirregoikoa’s request, the choir sang four popular Spanish and Basque numbers, whereby the artist replaced the text by quotations from contemporary French philosophers. The exhibition also comprises series of his graphic work in the shape of posters showing both philosophical texts and watercolours.
