Herman Denkens will mainly be remembered as the owner of the Gard Sivik café, in those days the place-to-be for artists and writers. Sivik Gard is also the name of a progressive literary magazine (1955-1964) with an editorial board that included Gust Gils, René Gysen and Paul Snoek. Herman Denkens, who was more of a graphic artist than a painter, would later also work in advertising. The rather brutal object, Loesie, reflects the neo-Dadaist trend that also left its traces in the Gard Sivik magazine.
