LATT: new art in Antwerp 1958-1962 #1 the attic myth
In 1953, the young Olivier Strebelle becomes a ceramics teacher at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts. Jan Dries is among his first students, together with Lutgart De Meyer, Louise Servaes, Dani Francq and Jef Verheyen, and others. He rapidly evolves from decorative applications to autonomous sculptural forms such as Zeegod, where monochrome colouring affirms its expressiveness. Since 1960, this improper use of the medium no longer suffices and he starts to sculpt in white marble.
