The collection XXX – The Museum of Forgotten History, with intervention by Maarten Vanden Eynde
Edward Lipski’s rats are somewhere in between human beings and animals. They are anomalies, images from a nightmare, based on reality but creepily disturbed. The artist himself speaks of a terrifying sort of ‘living death’. The rats’ unnatural poses and dysfunctional character are reminiscent of an experiment gone disgustingly wrong. The use of rats, commonly used for experimental purposes, strengthens this association. Lipski deliberately plays with the viewer’s emotions. He is more concerned with touching on the psychological aspect of the confrontation with reality than with offering social or political commentary.
