Vrielynck Collection #1: Julien Maire — Mixed Memory
Biunial lantern, 1880
Media Archaeology
English Biunial lantern, with a double lens system for the projection of ‘dissolving views’. This dissolve system allows one scene to gradually develop, for instance from day to night or from summer to winter. Possibilities include projecting moving details in a scene, such as the turning wheel of a watermill. The pioneer of dissolving projections is Henry Longdon Childe, who probably introduced this technique into Great Britain around 1820.
