M HKA reserves its fifth floor for surprising interventions and intimate pop-up presentations. INBOX is a place that inspires and surprises, one that offers us a glimpse into the world of passionate thinkers and doers. With INBOX, M HKA creates a physical space in which the museum addresses often-recurring questions.

In the periods between the various events, we present a selection of our collection works, with particular attention to video art.

My newest film The Walk shows a character made of water in the water, made of the sea in the sea. The figure dissolves in its environment, becomes one with the elements. The image has a poetic autonomy and refers to refugees who seek a better horizon by sea and land, but also to pilgrims, past and present, who are looking for answers.

Muxía in Spain, where this image originated, is important for pilgrims making the journey to Santiago de Compostela. Muxía forms a crossroads of myths and stories. It is located on the Costa da Morte (the ‘Death Coast’), the land of shipwrecks according to ancient legends. In Celtic times this place was granted magical powers. It was thought that at the end of the galaxy an island (Tir Na Nog) was located in a sea, with lush nature, free of diseases, where eternal youth reigned  and all needs were met. Stone boats carried the souls of the deceased across. Traces of this Celtic belief can still be found in the legends of Santiago Padrón and at Virxe da Barca (Maria) in Muxía. Homer and Plutarch also refers to “the land of the dead" in the Ocean (Mere Dutica). Aristotle called the way along this coast Camino Herácleo (the way of Hercules) or Camino de Isis (the way of Isis).

The soundtrack of this film is based on the opera L’Orfeo (1607) by Claudio Monteverdi. The recording of the opera was played in reverse and combined with sounds that were recorded while walking the Camino. Orpheus undertaking his walk to the underworld, to save his beloved Eurydice, backwards

In Finister, at the end of the Camino, there is a cliff overlooking the sea. There, at the end of the world, the sun set and the realm of the dead and rebirth began. It's also the end of my journey. I stand at the end of the world. Here you can go no further, the journey is over. I turn around and head home.
